Moving people and memories with ease
There’s more to your move than just getting there
When you move, you’re not just moving household goods. You’re moving memories and treasures. And you’re closing a chapter of your life to start a new one that’s full of surprises, hope and promise.
As your residential moving company, we’ll get you to your next step with our efficient, effective and straightforward approach.
Your assigned Move Consultant and Move Coordinator work together to oversee all the details and logistics of your move, taking the burden of planning off your shoulders. The coordinator determines the schedule and sets milestones to make sure everything is on-time and on-budget.
Peace of mind in a stressful time
After serving over 2 million customers since our doors opened in 1943, we’ve become a leader in quality service and customer care. Our dedication to honest, professional service means every member of our team is determined to make your move smooth, easy and efficient. And, our commitment to our original mission of providing you with Top Hat® service – delivering excellence to everyone entrusted to our care – remains the same.
All of our residential moving team members undergo a strict background check and drug screening. Our newly hired movers and packers are required to complete a comprehensive and rigorous hands-on training curriculum in our on-site learning center. And, as mask mandates are being implemented to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, our team members continue to adhere to our comprehensive health and safety protocols. View our short video to learn more about how our unique approach to training and development will give you peace of mind during your move or relocation:
Our moving crews take special care of your household goods, using our unique ULTRAWRAP service. This includes wrapping your larger items (like furniture) before they leave your home and placing them on our trucks, which have been specially designed to keep your items safe and secure during the move. We also use state-of-the-art packing materials, digital inventory and GPS tracking systems to ensure your belongings are protected and accounted for every step of the way.

How much do movers cost?
Every move is different and has different variables, so it’s difficult to confidently provide an exact estimate for your move without gathering some details first. At the same time, we understand how important it is to budget for the cost of your move, so we provide two convenient and easy ways to get an accurate, free moving estimate.
- With our Virtual Move Survey, all you have to do is set up an appointment with the Interstate team, show us around your home by using your smartphone or tablet, and you’ll receive an accurate and detailed cost estimate for your move within one business day.
- Or if you prefer and live in the Washington, DC metro area, we can send a Move Consultant to your home at your convenience to conduct a survey in-person.
What should I pack first when moving?
At Interstate, we offer three types of packing services: full-service packing, custom packing (e.g., breakables only or antique/unusual items) and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) packing, including a free expert packing class you can attend. If you feel comfortable taking on some of the packing yourself, we’ll supply you with all the materials and know-how you need to start the job of moving household goods to your new home.
We suggest starting with the least used rooms and non-essential items and working your way towards those items you use every day. You don’t want to pack away all your clothes or clear out your bathroom before you’re done using it. As you near the day of your move, trim down to what’s necessary and get ready to pack up the rest.
Did you know there are also items you should never pack? We have a full list for you in our Resources Center to check out before your move gets too far underway.
