SPRINGFIELD, VA – In light of the American Automobile Association’s survey revealing over one-third of drivers don’t follow “slow down, move over” laws, Interstate Trucking is urging more awareness of traffic situations by both personal and commercial vehicle operators.

The findings, which AAA released last week, reported 36% of drivers failed to reduce speed or change lanes when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle on the highway shoulder. The survey did find, however, that heavy truck operators were slightly more likely to slow down and/or move over than passenger vehicles.

“Truck drivers, especially fleet drivers, undergo a lot more continuing education and training programs than the general driving public, so it’s not surprising that they have a greater rate of compliance with highway safety laws,” said Interstate Moving │Relocation │Logistics Board Advisor, J.D. Morrissette. “However, the fact is that all drivers must practice awareness and compliance with all highway safety measures, especially when approaching emergency vehicles.

“At highway speeds, a fully loaded truck takes at least twice the distance to stop as a passenger vehicle,” continued Morrissette. “Drivers need to think about the vehicles around them and how to safely maneuver when unexpectedly encountering police, ambulances, or tow trucks parked on the side of highways.”

Interstate, which has won numerous safety awards from the American Trucking Association, has approximately 72 CDL and non-CDL drivers who have logged over 1,000 days without a DOT-reportable accident. The company has rigorous training programs as well as driver accountability measures like driver-facing event recorders to see exactly what happens on the road. “We implement this technology in our training regimen because the footage helps managers walk our drivers through what they did right and what they should keep in mind when the same situation arises in the future,” said Morrissette.
