How AI and Proactive Coaching Are Transforming Trucking Safety

Let's Talk

Interstate’s Director of Safety and Compliance, Anthony Triggs, recently joined Chris Harris and John Farquhar on the Safety Dawg “Trucking Risk and Insurance” podcast to discuss how event recorder technology and a driver first mindset are raising the bar for safety in the moving industry.

At Interstate Moving | Relocation | Logistics, safety is at the heart of everything we do. It is embedded in our culture, our operations, and the way we care for the people and property entrusted to us every day. Here is a preview of what Anthony covers in the episode.

“We’re not perfect. We’re here to learn and continue to learn. And at the end of the day, it’s making us better.”

25 Years of Experience, a Fresh Opportunity

Anthony brings more than 25 years of safety and compliance experience to his role at Interstate. Even though his role is in management, he obtained his Commercial Driver’s License early in his career and still maintains it today. His philosophy is simple: never ask a driver to do something you cannot do yourself.

When he transitioned from freight to the moving industry, he estimated the moving sector was roughly 10 to 15 years behind in telematics, event recorders, and digital operations. He and the Interstate team treated that gap as an opportunity to implement new technology with the right foundation from the start. In the full episode, he walks through vendor selection, system testing, and the phased rollout of event recorders across company vehicles, local contractors, and owner operators.

Built on Trust, Powered by AI

Anthony describes how Interstate introduced dashcam technology through a series of operational huddles at each of its four facilities. These were informal, face-to-face conversations designed to explain what was changing and why. The central message: the primary purpose of event recorders at Interstate is driver exoneration. Drivers volunteered to be early testers, and the rollout proceeded with minimal resistance.

The system also includes AI powered nudges that provide verbal alerts inside the cab when a potential safety concern is detected. A driver receives two to three prompts to self-correct before the safety team is ever notified. This keeps coaching proactive and gives drivers the opportunity to adjust in the moment.

During the first year of implementation, Interstate’s fleet safety score improved from 91 to 95 and has since climbed to 98 within the company’s insurance captive. Drivers have embraced the scoring system, often asking about their individual performance and looking for ways to improve.

Protecting What Matters Most

The items that Interstate transports are frequently irreplaceable. Family heirlooms, keepsakes, and personal belongings represent a customer’s entire life. That reality reinforces why safety technology investments like event recorders carry special importance in the moving industry.
